The state of Nebraska has a rich military history that dates back to early forts being established to protect trade and interact with Native Americans. Its citizens have served in many of the major conflicts and formed their National Guard in 1881. It was home to Forts such as Atkinson, Kearny, and Omaha, but all have since closed with Fort Omaha closing in 1974. Today. the state is home to one military installation:

Offutt Air Force Base

The base was started as Fort Crook in the 1890s and became home to early military aviation units in 1918. During World War II, a massive bomber production plant was established, churning out over 1,500 B-26 Marauder medium bombers and a significant number of B-29 Superfortresses, including the Enola Gay, which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Today, the base is home to the headquarters of United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), and is responsible for overseeing America’s nuclear arsenal.
