The military community in North Carolina is a very rich and diverse one. As you will see, there are bases across the entire state, each with their own unique history and purpose. Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center

The Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center is located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The center provides aviation logistics support to the Coast Guard and other federal agencies through its facilities and personnel.
The center’s mission is to provide crew members with equipment, supplies and services that enable them to perform their duties safely. It also manages training for those who are stationed at various bases across the country; this includes everything from aircraft maintenance schools to aircraft carrier qualification courses.

Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City

    The Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City is located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It is home to the Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center and Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON). Both units are part of the U.S. Navy Reserve’s Helicopter Maritime Strike Group 2 (HMSG-2), which includes USS Makin Island; along with several other ships, aircraft and personnel from that unit.

    These assets are all used for missions such as drug interdiction, migrant search and rescue operations as well as humanitarian aid efforts in Africa and Latin America where they have been deployed since 2002 under Operation Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF).

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina

The Coast Guard Sector North Carolina is located in Morehead City, NC. It is one of the largest Coast Guard Stations in the country, housing over 1,000 military personnel and civilian employees. The mission of this base is to protect lives at sea by providing search and rescue services, aids to navigation support and response capabilities in times of crisis or disaster.

The benefits of being stationed here include having access to some of the best beaches on Earth (including Wrightsville Beach), as well as being within driving distance from other great cities like Jacksonville or Raleigh-Durham area. There are also plenty of nearby amenities such as hotels and restaurants if you’re looking for something more than just an island getaway!

Sector North Carolina provides all of the benefits and amenities that you would expect from a military base, as well as civilian jobs. The pay is competitive with other sectors of the military and civilian world in this area.

Fort Liberty Army Base

Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) is located approximately 15 miles west of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and is home to the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division.

The installation consists of over 100,000 acres of land and over 50 training areas including:

  • The largest military training area in America – Camp Mackall (formerly known as Camp Mackall AASTC)
  • The Combined Arms Live Fire Complex (CALF) which includes firing ranges for conventional weapons such as tanks and fighter aircrafts; other firing ranges are located near Pope AFB airfield near Jacksonville NC; another range at Fort Jackson SC

The base is also home to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) which manages all aspects of training for the Army.

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point

The Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point is located in Havelock, NC. It’s home to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is responsible for training pilots and pilots-in-command; it also hosts USMC aviation units such as the 1st Attack Wing (formerly known as the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade).

The base employs over 5,000 military personnel and has a budget of over $600 million annually.

The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing provides the command and control for all fixed-wing aviation units in the Marine Corps. It also trains pilots, aircrew members, and support personnel from all over the world. The wing is responsible for more than 3,000 aircraft and approximately 30,000 people—including military personnel and civilian contractors.

Marine Corps Air Station New River

The base is located just south of Jacksonville, North Carolina. It was initially built as a Marine Corps air station in 1942 and was used by the Army Air Forces after World War II ended.

The base today houses nearly 2,000 active duty service members and contractors. The mission of this facility is to train pilots to fly helicopters and aircraft such as the CH-53 Super Stallion or HU-25 Guardian Jet Ranger Helicopter (which are used by special operations forces).

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune

Camp Lejeune is the largest Marine base on the east coast. It’s located in Jacksonville, North Carolina and home to I MEF (International Marine Echelon). The base covers more than 100 square miles and has over 50,000 Marines stationed there at any given time.

The base also serves as a center for training exercises with other countries such as Japan and South Korea as well as NATO members like Italy, France and Germany.

The base is named after Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, John A. Lejeune. He served in World War I, and then again during World War II.

The base is home to the 2nd Marine Division, Headquarters Battalion and the 4th Marine Logistics Group. It’s also the home of the I MEF, which is comprised of seven units:

2nd Marine Division, III MEF (Marine Expeditionary Force), 4th Marine Logistics Group, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Camp Lejeune North Carolina

Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point

Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point is located on the Atlantic side of Boston in South Boston. The base has been used as a military facility since before World War II, when it was called the Marine Defense Depot.

It’s now known as the Army Property Disposal Office, and it’s one of only two places in North Carolina where toxic waste can be disposed of—the other being Fort Bragg.

Pope Army Air Field

    Pope Army Airfield is part of the Fort Bragg garrison — home to roughly one tenth of America’s Army. The base was named in honor of First Lieutenant Harley H. Pope who died during World War II while serving as an officer with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.

    The garrison provides a vast array of services to Pope Airmen, many of which meet or exceed services typically offered at Air Force bases. Team Pope has built a great relationship with Fort Bragg over the years and our partnership benefits everyone within the joint community.

    The lead Air Force tenant unit on Pope Army Airfield is the 43d Air Mobility Operations Group (AMOG), and its mission statement is, “Project the Force, Support the Force, and Train the Force”. 

    The 43 AMOG is responsible for rapid strategic deployment of forces assigned to Joint Special Operations Command and the U.S. Army’s XVIII Airborne Corps and 82nd Airborne Division. The group provides combatant commanders with Airborne Joint Forcible Entry, combat airlift, aerial port operations, command and control, and other enabling capabilities.

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base

    Seymour Johnson Air Force Base (formerly known as Seymour Johnson Field) is a United States Air Force base located in Goldsboro, North Carolina. It is home to the 4th Fighter Wing and host air force activities for Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst.

    Seymour Johnson AFB was established five months after the United States entered World War II when the War Department approved the establishment of a technical school two miles southeast of Goldsboro. Seymour Johnson Field was activated on June 12, 1942, as Headquarters, Technical School, Army Air Forces Technical Training Command.

    The base is named in honor of U.S. Navy Lt. Seymour A. Johnson, a native of Goldsboro. Johnson, a test pilot, was killed in an aircraft crash near Norbeck, Md., March 5, 1941.
