What Military Bases are in Georgia?

The state of Georgia has been involved in every U.S. conflict from the American Revolution to the present day. Georgia has several military museums and historical sites that document this such as the National Civil War Naval Museum and the Fort Morris Historic Site. The state is home to thirteen military installations:

• Fort Eisenhower
• Fort Stewart
• Fort Moore
• Hunter Army Airfield
• MCLB Albany
• Moody Air Force Base
• Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay
• Robins Air Force Base

Dobbins Air Reserve Base

The base was originally constructed in 1941 to be an alternate landing site for Atlanta’s civilian airport, but because of World War II, the U.S. Army Air Corps took possession of it. It was primarily used as a training ground for B-29 Superfortress bomber crews which were critical for the war. The base received its current name in 1950 in honor of Captain Charles M. Dobbins, a World War II pilot from Marietta, GA who was shot down while dropping paratroopers over sicily.

Fort Eisenhower

Fort Eisenhower, formerly known as Fort Gordon, is located southwest of Augusta, GA and has evolved from a World War II training camp to a center for cutting-edge cyber warfare training. The base received its new name in recognition of President Eisenhower’s vital role in establishing the National Security Agency (NSA). It is a major center for cyber training and education, and it houses the U.S. Army Cyber Command, the Cyber Center of Excellence, and Fort Gordon NSA.

Fort Stewart

The base was established as Camp Stewart in the 1940s in honor of an American Revolutionary hero, General Daniel Stewart, who was local to the area. Its initial focus was as a training ground for anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) units to counter the threat of enemy aircraft. In 1956 the camp was changed to a fort, signifying its permanent status. In 1974, Fort Stewart became home to the 3rd Infantry Division, solidifying its role as a center for mechanized warfare training.

Fort Moore

Fort Moore, formerly known as Fort Benning, was established in 1918 to provide basic training for soldiers during World War I. In 1922 it was transitioned to a fort and became a permanent training base for the U.S. Army Infantry. The base received its new name in 2023 in honor of Lieutenant General Moore who was a decorated soldier that served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Hunter Army Airfield

The airfield was established in 1929 as the Savannah Municipal Airport, but was acquired by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940 as the threat of World War II increased. From 1946-1966, Hunter Army Airfield was deactivated and returned to the city of Savannah for civilian use, but as the need for helicopter pilots increased it was reactivated. The base became a major center for rotary-wing pilot training, and in 1972 it was combined with Fort Stewart to create the United States Army Flight Training Center.

MCLB Albany

Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany has been a vital center for Marine Corps logistics since the 1950s. The base plays a critical role in preparing Marines and their equipment for deployments, ensuring they have what they need to succeed in any mission.

Moody Air Force Base

In 1940, local leaders in Valdosta, GA recognized the potential for a wartime contribution and began lobbying for an airbase. After a year, their efforts were successful with the establishment of Valdosta Airfield. The base was later dedicated to Major George P. Moody, a U.S. Army Air Corps test pilot who died in a crash testing a new training aircraft. By 1945, over 7,200 pilots graduated from primary flight training here. Today the base remains a vital training center for aircrews, with a focus on F-16 training, Combat Search and Rescue operations, and Special Operations Forces support.

Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay

In 1954, the U.S. Army established Kings Bay as an ocean terminal to store and ship ammunition during potential national emergencies like the Korean War, and in 1962 the Cuban Missile Crisis reinforced this need. In the 1970s the base officially transferred from the Army to the navy and became the homeport for ballistic missile submarines. Today, the base is home to 10 Trident submarines, forming a crucial component of the U.S. nuclear deterrence strategy.

Robins Air Force Base

In 1941 construction started and in 1948 the base was named after Brigadier General Augustine Warner Robins. During World War II the base provided repair crews, spare parts, and logistical support for air units fighting in Europe and the Pacific. Today, the base remains a center for aircraft maintenance and sustainment in the U.S. Air Force. It maintains a wide range of aircraft, including fighters, airlifters, helicopters, and a variety of specialized utility aircraft.
