The state of Iowa has had a militia presence since the early 1800s, but it wasn’t until 1878 when the Iowa National Guard was officially formed. Soldiers from these units have been involved in every conflict since World War I. The state is now home to two military installations:

  • Camp Dodge
  • Sioux City Air National Guard Base

Camp Dodge

Camp Dodge was established in 1907 for National Guard training and has evolved into a vital training center for the U.S. military. It is named after Major General Grenville M. Dodge, a Civil War hero and prominent figure in Iowa’s development. While the base has decreased in size since World War II, it has continued to undergo modernization efforts to keep pace with the evolving training requirements of the modern world.

Sioux City Air National Guard Base

Originally a World War II training ground, this base has transformed into an important refueling hub for the U.S. Air Force. The base was established in 1942, but construction on it began almost immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Up until 2003, the base was home to a variety of fighter jets, but they transitioned to KC-135 Stratotankers to fill the critical role of aerial refueling and providing other support to fighter jets.
